There is already a large, well-established, commercial hydrogen production industry. Essentially all this hydrogen is made from fossil fuels, mostly natural gas. In addition, this hydrogen production involves the generation of large amounts of CO_2 and utilizes hydrogen-CO_2 separation technologies. Therefore, the cost of CO_2 capture for geologic storage (pure, dried and compressed to supercritical conditions) could be lower in hydrogen production than for other potential CO_2 capture applications.rnThis paper will address the cost and performance of hydrogen production from various fuels with and without CO_2 capture for geologic storage. This transparent and consistent analysis will include both commercial and advanced technologies to show current costs and the potential for reducing hydrogen and CO_2 capture costs in the future. It is based on several recent analyses of hydrogen production costs.
