Hizikia fusiformis and Undaria pinnatifida are the most plentiful edible algae widely cultured in Zhejiang Province, China and have been recognized as healthy foods and Chinese traditional herbal medicines for centuries. For understanding their therapeutic functions and expanding their physical health of the people, different components were separated according to systematic fractionation with different polar solvents including petroleum ether, e-ther, ethyl acetate, ethanol and water, and their blood-anticoagulant activities were investigated by using the method of bioassay. Results show the ethanol soluble fraction (ESF) of Hizikia fusiformis exhibited no blood-anticoagulant activity, while the components (hot water extract) obtained from ESF gave obvious blood-anticoagulant activity. Further studies suggest that the principal components in the hot water extract from Hizikia fusiformis with high blood-anticoagulant activity should be sulfated polysaccharides (SPS). The activities of SPS were positively correlated with their contents of total sugar and fucose. Sulfated polysaccharides could also be isolated from the seaweed by a direct extraction of hot water (pH3, 90℃, 4h). In such a case, the yield of crude sulfated polysaccharides reached 3.57%, and their contents of total sugar, SO_4~(2-) and fucose 21.0, 8.3 and 13.6%, respectively. As for Undaria pinnatifida, its n-butanol extract fractionated from ESF could prolong the time of blood coagulation. Its sulfated polysaccharides, however, showed no blood-anticoagulant activity.
