This research is aimed at including the effect of the coordination number -the number of enduring contacts a particle has with its immediate neighbors - on granular pressure and associated stresses in a continuum model of bubbling fluidized beds. The coordination number is expected to have a direct impact on local maximum packing of particles and, hence, on the fluidization behavior. Here we propose a heuristically formulated transport equation for the coordination number and use it conjunction with an Eulerian/Eulerian two fluid model to predict the behavior of a fluidized bed.
