In the recent ISO 19906 Standard, Petroleum and natural gas industries - Arctic offshore structures, there are recommendations for design pressures for wide structures for Baltic ice with a thickness of less than 1.5 m and for Arctic ice with a thickness of greater than 1.5 m. In this paper we compare these pressures with a model based on the reduction of variance approach from 0.5 m by 0.5 m load panels in combination with High Pressure Zones. The model assumes that the statistical characteristics at the basic panel size are independent of location within the contact zone and independent of the number of panels included. Even so, the model can reproduce both of the ISO formulations to better than 2% over a wide range of ice thickness and structure widths. The interpretation of the model and its implications are discussed.
