CASE STUDY: THE SYDNEY SUPERDOME, OLYMPIC PARK

The Sydney SuperDome is a new enclosed multi-use arena built for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It seats 21,000 people on five levels of a large arena bowl, and has additional function spaces, restaurants, exhibition space and back of house areas. The SuperDome was designed using a fire-engineered approach to meet the performance requirements of the Building Code of Australia. A level 2 analysis (system performance evaluation against established acceptance criteria) was undertaken using a wide range of fire and occupant scenarios to test and develop the concept designs for fire and life safety. The approval process involved detailed and ongoing review by the AHJ, the Fire Brigades, and a peer reviewer with final sign off by all parties.
