Based on a requirements definition for media standards and protocols used in mobile communication networks in Europe, as well as other parts of the world, concepts and system architectures for the integration of multimedia functionality into mobile handsets will be discussed. While high-end concepts typically are making extensive use of powerful application processors, a performance analysis of multimedia algorithms indicates an optimized hardware/ software partitioning achieving minimum system costs and power consumption, both being key to mobile handset design. This leads to the definition of the sciCOS family of mobile companion ICs as being introduced by sci-worx GmbH. The related software architecture is based on a Proxy concept, minimizing the integration impact on the host processor, typically being a part of the handset's Baseband Processor.
