Evaluation of unbumt carbon in fly ash can be based on proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, petrographic analysis of coal, thermogravimetric analysis of coal etc.. The unbumt in fly ash is mainly influenced in Indian context by rank of the coal, percentage ash in coal, the furnace aerodynamics and residence time available for char combustion. Because of multi- dimensional influence, it is very difficult to make a prediction of carbon loss by using simple analysis of coal like proximate, ultimate analyses etc.. The methodology discussed here is a combination of laboratory work, field testing, field data collection for arriving at a predictive method for percentage combustible in fly ash and bottom ash. Knowing the percentage combustibles in fly-ash and bottom ash the carbon loss can be calculated.
