The history of power development in India dates back to as early as the late 19th century . The development accelerated after Independence and has assumed a faster pace in the eighties when a large network of 400 kV transmission lines emerged in the country along with the concept of long distance HVDC transmission lines and 800 kV AC transmission lines Thus +/- 500 KV HVDC lines and 800 KV AC lines were constructed in the country. With the ambitious power development program in the country, higher capacity lines become essential when high capacity power stations or power pools are established. Bulk power transmission not only facilitates reduction in number of new lines to be constructed but also offers relief for ever increasing right of way problem. In future, for bulk power transmission, more number of HVDC, 800 kV S/C transmission lines as well as 800 kV D/C and 1000 kV S/C transmission lines may be required. Design of these high power capacity lines require careful scrutiny not only w.r.t reliability but also w.r.t electrical fields and line interferences. The paper briefly describes the studies conducted by POWERGRID for evolving optimised designs for bulk power transmission line. Salient observations and results of the preliminary design & optimisation studies (with special reference to interference) presently undertaken in POWERGRID for 800 kV D/C and 1000 kV S/C transmission lines have been presented in the paper.
