SAFETY SYSTEMS : A CULTURE IN NATIONAL THERMAL POWER CORPORATION LIMITED

Safety plays very significant role in our life whether we are at work, on road or at house. From the studies it has been seen that majority of accidents occur because of ignorance, negligence and lack of knowledge about the job. The best way to prevent accidents is to make persons aware of the potential/ hidden hazards, impart proper training and to provide healthy condition at work place. The best results can be obtained if proper and easy systems are developed and adopted at work place. In Construction, Erection, Commissioning of Thermal Power Stations, number of hectic and multifarious activities are involved which start from deep civil excavation to high and heavy construction of buildings, structural / equipment erection and finally commissioning Power Generating units. Looking into the past experiences and working, Safety Systems have been introduced in the very initial stage at all the coming power plants of NTPC. Safety Departments have been set up with postings of qualified Safety Officers and various Safety Promotion activities have been perceived in the very initial stage of inception. Some of which are detailed below: -- Potential hazard identification : The major potential hazards are identified during the safety reviews at various locations in the plant area. For all these hazards, operating instructions for their control/mitigation by the employees working in the concerned area are prepared and thf same are displayed at the locations. Also need-based training are being imparted. These potential hazards can be caused by the leaks of chemicals and gases, leak in Boiler tubes, coal pipe lines and ash pipe line leaks, oil tank fires. Engineering solutions for the control of these hazards are also prepared where ever possible, by the Engineering Design groups.
