A soft-decision maximum-likelihood trellis decoding technique for augmented row and column (RAC) array (multidimensional) codes is introduced. The augmentation is performed by adding additional information bits in a repetition code format to parity check positions of the original RAC code. The augmentation technique has a simple construction procedure and allows us to create new codes from existing ones. Because of structured superimposition of sub codes, a compact trellis diagram of these codes has been constructed. A maximum-likelihood decoding using soft-decision detection scheme has been implemented and results are presented. Code rate improvements and performance characteristics of the augmentation technique are given.
