NO_x and SO_x Emission from Cofiring Biomass and Coal

Co-combustion a high-sulfur coal with two biomass was carried out in a horizontal electric heating reactor at 1273K Gaseous emissions such as SO_x and NO_x were measured. The experimental results indicated that the levels of SO_x and NO_x emission significantly decreased when combusting biomass and mixtures of coal with biomass in comparison to pure coal firing. Moreover, it is found that biomass with higher volatile content and lower fuel-S and N contents, has better ability to reduce NO_x and SO_x emissions. When cofirng coal and leaves, the rate of NO_x and SO_x conversion decreased 2% and 10% respectively, while cofirng coal and branches, the rate of NO_x and SO_x conversion decreased 33% and 16.7% respectively.
