GLASS—WHY IT BREAKS

Over the last 15 years, the author has investigated a variety of glass failures on structures throughout the USA. These failures have included spontaneous glass breakage, thermal energy breakage, hurricane-related breakage, and earthquake-related breakage. This paper describes the mechanism and characteristics of each type of failure, preventative measures, and remedies for existing installations that may be prone to failure.
