Broiler Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome: A Primary Breeder Veterinarian's Perspective

Ascites in commercial poultry was first diagnosed over 30 years ago in birds that were being reared at high altitude. Over the years, the problems associated with ascites have increased while the clinical nature of the disease has changed. Instead of being seen only in males reared at high altitudes during the winter months, the disease can now be seen in both sexes at all times of the year. Because we know that ascites is associated with rapid growth rate, the problem is likely to continue to worsen. There are cost effective and easily applied management practices that can reduce the severity of the problem at the broiler level and newly developed selection techniques to reduce the problem at the primary breeder level.
