Chromatic dispersion is the main limiting factor in very high bitrate transmission systems operating near 1.55 mum over standard single mode fibers (SMF)~1. The interaction between frequency chirp and fiber dispersion has been considered the major impairment in optical communication systems. However, when properly designed, this interaction may extend the transmission length in comparison with pure IM-DD ("Intensity Modulation-Direct Detection") systems~2.
