Existing structures built before 1970s are gravity load designed with inadequate lateral load resistance because earlier codes specified lower levels of seismic loads and many of these structures are still in service beyond their design life. On the other hand, some deterioration of building components is encountered at old structures due to the action of different hazard factors. The paper presents the characteristics of existing structures under seismic motions, general and specific rehabilitation solutions detailed for reinforced concrete and masonry structures. Rehabilitation of different types of existing structures are described: two reinforced concrete framed structure with local damage caused by the action of chloride ions and reinforcement weakness; two masonry buildings affected by a recent earthquake; an apartment house affected by an explosion.
