Impact of Uncertainties on the Application of District Cooling Systems and Individual Cooling Systems

This paper conducts a systematic performance assessment of district cooling systems by comparing it with individual cooling systems considering uncertainties in several key factors. Performance of district cooling systems is analysed by changing the combinations of buildings with different functions. By being compared with individual cooling systems, recommendations are summarized for better application of district cooling systems. Optimal combination of buildings for district cooling systems and individual cooling systems is obtained. Uncertainties in the cooling load prediction, chilled water network resistance, rated coefficients of performance of chillers are considered and their impact on selecting the cooling systems are studied. By summarizing the advantages and shortcomings of the district cooling systems, suggestions are given for the future application of district cooling systems.
