Measurement and Comparison Study of Intermitted Heating and Continuous Heating in Residences between England and China Hot Summer Cold Winter Area

With the economic growth and the improvement of residents’ expectation of living standard, energy consumed for domestic heating increases rapidly in the Hot Summer Cold Winter (HSCW) area of China, where no centralized heating is provided. To meet residents heating demand, intermitted heating has been proposed and considered to be energy saving especially in regions requiring heating but not extremely cold, like the HSCW area of China and the UK. In this paper, three typical heating systems: centralized intermitted heating, decentralized intermitted heating and centralized continuous heating, have been investigated through on-site measurement with regard to indoor thermal environment and energy consumption. It is found that the intermitted heating system has a significant energy saving potential compared with continuous heating system, meanwhile being able to provide warm indoor environment. Additionally, the decentralized heating system is more suitable for intermitted operation compared with the centralized system.
