This paper addresses the measurement of smoke density on a red phosphorus pellet using a smoke density chamber in accordance with NBS 4792 versus weight loss over time measurement techniques. Weight loss over time as a measure of usable burn time of a red phosphorus candle or pellet can yield incomplete or flawed data. The weight loss measurement techniques do not measure relative smoke density and are susceptible to variation based on the material orientation. The smoke chamber technique yield more reliable data on usable burn time plus the smoke density is a measure of the quality of the smoke being produced. Attenuation versus time output curves are discussed. Various types of red phosphorus material are reviewed and the result of the two testing methods compared. Safety considerations related to the composition are also be discussed.
