It has been suggested that cultivation of non-mycorrhizal crops decreases the population of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, resulting in decline in AM colonization, P uptake and growth of succeeding crops. However, non-mycorrhizal crops also need to be cultivated in crop rotations. To try to establish an effective means to improve the growth of succeeding crops, green manure crops (AM hosts) were arranged spatially or temporally when nonmycorrhizal crops were grown.Cabbage (non-mycorrhizal host) was intercropped with red clover, white clover or vetch (AM hosts). After harvest of cabbage and green manure crops, winter wheat was grown as a succeeding crop. The percent AM colonization and yield of winter wheat grown after cultivation of cabbage with intercropped legumes were greater than those after sole cabbage cropping. After harvest of cabbage, sunflower was grown as green manure crop another treatment consisted of cabbage followed by fallowing. In the following season, maize was grown. The AM colonization and shoot dry weight of maize after sunflower cropping were much greater than those after fallowing. The results suggested that AM colonization, P uptake and productivity of crops after cultivation of non-mycorrhizal crops are improved by arranging AM host crops spatially and temporally as green manures.
