Changes in the N, P and K contents of banana roots, rhizomes, pseudo-stem, leaves and fingers of banana were measured at eight growing stages in field experiments in Hainan province, in China. The objective of the study was to increase the understanding of the characteristics of NPK nutrition during banana growth and to discover relationship between NPK uptake and biomass and yield of banana.Contents of N and K of organs fluctuated with successive growth stages. They were low in the first 4 MAT, high at flower shooting stage, and decreased again with development of banana fruits. The uptake of N, P and K could be described with a sigmoid curve. The ration of N : P_2O_5 increased from 1 : 0.15 to 1 : 0.11, while N : K_2O ratio decreased from 1 : 2.15 to 1 : 3.01 with banana growing. The highest N content (26 g/kg) content was in leaves and the highest P content (5.9 g/kg) and K content (102 g/kg) in bunch axis.
