COASTAL GTOS AND ITS REMOTE SENSING NEEDS FOR INITIAL PRODUCTS

The Coastal Module of Global Terrestrial Observing System (C-GTOS) is at itsinception with the recent publication of its “Strategic Design and Phase 1 ImplementationPlan” (GTOS 2005,http://www.fao.org/gtos/pubs.html html). The program’s primary goal is todetect, assess and predict global and large-scale regional change associated with land-based,wetland and freshwater ecosystems along coasts. The system combines the integration of bothin situ and remote observations and will be phased in over coming years. Five specificpriority projects are being actively pursued, and all are dependent on remote sensing to somedegree. Here we summarize the needs and status of the remote sensing components for each.In some cases products can come from GTOS or the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO), the secretariat for GTOS; but in other cases the remote sensing and related validationcapabilities must be drawn from other agencies and programs. One purpose for thispresentation is to open doors of opportunity for collaboration.
