This paper studied the use of controllable surge arrester (CSA) in UHV system to on eliminate closing resistor of circuit breaker. The basic working principle of CSA was introduced. The control strategy to limit closing overvoltage was analyzed. With a typical UHV system structure, the impact of CSA on characteristics of overvoltage was studied. The impact of parameters of CSA on overvoltage suppression was analyzed. According to the research results of overvoltage characteristics, the criterion for eliminating the closing resistor of the circuit breaker by using the CSA is proposed. The adaptability of the CSA parameters for different line lengths is studied. The working conditions of the CSA with different parameters under different working conditions were studied. The parameter configuration of the CSA was proposed to eliminate closing resistor of circuit breaker.
