Lasers in Caries Diagnosis and Prevention

The potential of erbium laser in caries prevention and optical methods for caries diagnosis were evaluated. Temperature, chemical and structural changes were analysed in irradiated samples. Caries lesions were examined by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Erbium irradiation changes organic matrix, besides reducing the water content and the mineral matrix in hard tissue. OCT was able to detected early caries.
