Influence of solvent preswelling on coal utilization processes

The Pyrolysis and the subsequent carbon dioxide activation of high volatile coals preswollen in basic organic solvents are investigated by thermogravimetric measurements in comparison to unpretreated coals. The microstructures of the activated chars are analysed considering the influence of the preswelling process. The determined apparent surface areas and the pore radii distributions show that preswelling causes a pore widening and an increase of the tota pore volume, accompanied by a development of new submicropores.
