The paper will discuss the use of specially designed magnetic separators to improve the quality and reduce scrap in a typical ceramic plant. Magnets, both permanent and electromagnet, will be described for slip, body and glaze treatment and recent statistical evidence will be provided as to their success. The implementation of magnetic separators in the purification of glass sands and other minerals, will be highlighted for both wet and dry treatment. Advances in magnetic drum separator design and its importance to more user friendly equipment for mineral processing will be explained.
