The inductance parameter plays a significant role in steady-state and dynamic characteristics of electromagnetic equipment and machines. Definitions and properties of inductance while the machine is in saturation are studied and various measurement methods are illustrated and compared. Special attention is given to d-axis and q-axis synchronous inductances of a PM synchronous motor model which are used in controlling the machine and predicting performance. Several measurement methods of determining sychronous inductances and PM flux linkage at a saturated condition are introduced. Measured data on variation of synchronous inductances with respect to stator current magnitude and angle are also presented.
