Road transport plays a significant role in various industries and mobility services around the globe and has a vital impact on our daily lives. However, it also has serious impacts on both public health and the environment due to the continuous increase in energy demand. Excess energy consumption may be avoided if an optimal driving strategy is implemented subject to the surrounding conditions of a vehicle and existing constraints. Eco-driving refers to cost-effective driving styles that help to reduce energy consumption. Variation in the driving pattern has resulted in excess energy consumption. Excess energy consumption has reduced the effectiveness of the energy efficiency of vehicles. Development of an optimal driving strategy has been the subject of eco-driving. Many studies claim that the adoption of eco-driving practices, such as eco-driving training programs has the potential to improve fuel efficiency. Eco-driving has been trialled in a number of countries and there is growing evidence suggesting it is a cost-effective approach for reducing energy consumption. A possible strategy is accelerating the vehicle to high speed and coast to a lower speed with the motor off. This method will reduce energy flow to zero during the coast phase. This strategy is known as a `Pulse and Glide' or `Burn and Coast' in some references. The present work focuses on the development of the driving strategy through testbed simulation which will play a significant role in reducing energy consumption.
