High speed railway plays an important role in social development for its advantages of fast running speed, high comfort, good punctuality and large capacity. However, frequent and intense pantograph catenary arc has a great threat to train normal running. There is an urgent requirement to build a reasonable standard to evaluate pantograph catenary interaction via pantograph catenary arc duration. In this paper, a new evaluation criterion model based on pantograph strip erosion mass loss caused by pantograph catenary arc is proposed. Firstly, a pantograph catenary arc model is built to obtain the heat flux density injected into pantograph strip. Then the heat flux is set as a moving heat source whose frequency is related to train running speed. Study results show the mass loss area presents an approximately linear increase at different running speeds as time goes on. The mass loss area decreases from 16.9 mm
