Numerous experiments on vortex induced vibrations (VIV) have been carried out at MARINTEK and NTNU during the last 10 years. Results have been published in terms of MSc and PhD thesis, project reports and papers in international journals and conferences. The projects are divided into two groups, one dealing with rigid cylinder sections that have free or motion controlled oscillations, while the other contains experiments on long, flexible beams. This paper makes an initial attempt to describe what has been done and present key results in a consistent way. Experimental techniques, methods for data analysis and further use of results are briefly commented but not discussed in any detail. These important aspects of research will be given more attention in an extensive review that will be published in the near future. The overall conclusion is that much new insight and information have been gained, but there are still aspects of VIV that so far have not been explored and hence call for further experimental work.
