The 2D hydroelastic water impact of a cylindrical shell is numerically studied. A Boundary Element Method (BEM) is applied for the water flow, while a modal analysis is used for the structural response. The non-viscous flow separation on the curved cylinder surface is simulated by the BEM by combining a local analytical solution with the numerical method. Flat plate theories are also used to solve the fluid flow in the coupled analyses. Two different couplings are applied. A partly coupled solution considers the interaction between the water flow and the elastic vibrations while the rigid-body motion is separately calculated. The fully coupled solution considers the simultaneous interaction between the rigid-body motion, the water flow and the elastic vibrations. Reasonable agreement with experimental and numerical results by other researchers is demonstrated.
