Recent observations show that freak or rogue wave events occur more often than what classical statistical theories suggest. In order to study their potential devastating effect on ship structures, taking linear dispersive focusing waves, assumed as freak wave, and extreme regular waves as input waves, a series of towing tests were conducted in wave tank with an elastic container ship model. This paper presents a detailed experimental analysis to investigate longitudinal bending loads and whipping responses due to bottom and bowflare slamming. The influences of various parameters of input waves on vertical bending moments and whipping loads are discussed. Numerical simulation was also performed for towing tests in regular wave using nonlinear time domain seakeeping code.
