Application and demonstration of diffractive optics for head-mounted displays

Abstract: We present an overview of diffractive optics technologyand the advantages this technology offers when appliedto head-mounted displays (HMD). We show especially theimpact on weight reduction when diffractive elementsare used to correct chromatic aberrations in full-colorHMDs. We discuss the effect of higher diffractiveorders on image quality and show how to model theseeffects. Finally, we present the results of ademonstration of a diffractive element in aconventional monochromatic HMD, compare the performanceof the hybrid and conventional systems, and demonstratethe validity of our model. !4
