GREEN ROOFS AS MEMORIAL GARDENS: REVOLUTIONIZING URBAN CEMETERIES

As cities grow in density, space rapidly becomes an expensive and precious commodity, particularly if it is central to downtown. Dense cities have large populations that require extensive lands to accommodate their deceased. Although the world has changed dramatically over the past century, our means of burial have not; we continue to perpetuate expansive cemeteries despite rising spatial concerns. Today, many cemeteries within metropolises are reaching capacity. A new form of urban burial is required. By combining green roof technologies with the programmatic elements of a cremation-only cemetery, green roof memorial gardens can provide an innovative solution to urban burial concerns around the world. Through the development of intensive rooftop gardens that house cremated remains, we can: maximize spatial efficiency in urban cemeteries; offer greater burial options than traditional cemeteries; increase visitation rates; and create an environmentally conscious alternative for burial spaces in urban environments.
