The numerous attempts of the NIS scientists to apply red mud from the alumina production as a charge material in the ferrous metallurgy have been failed. Substituting new alumina by recycled material still remains the only feasible option for indirect reduction of red mud generation. The NiO-containing spent catalysts with alumina carrier from the ammoniac production were routinely investigated as a charge material. It was shown that this waste was suitable for manufacturing the alumina bearing refractory cement. The clinker was produced by application of the carbon reductant in the specific electroslag crucible remelting furnace. Its sufficient feature lies in providing even heating of a melt. It was proved that this advantage brought about mostly complete reduction of NiO along with simultaneous separation of the metallic and oxide phases. The final oxide product tolerated the Ukrainian standards and can be used in the cement industry. Moreover it should be applied in foundry for substitute of the ESR flux AN-292.
