Flooded abandoned lignite mines are characterized by a very low pH and high Fe concentrations, low P and inorganic C concentrations. An attractive approach to acidity removal is through self-sustaining biologically mediated alkalinity generating processes. In laboratory microcosms organic amendment an inorganic nutrients (P, N) were added to the sediment surface. Alkalinity production has greatly been enhanced through addition of organic wastes and nutrients. This technique has successfully been applied in microcosms, however, not in whole lake experiments. In all laboratory studies simulating lake conditions, the iron and sulfur acid containing influx of waste piles has more or less been neglected.
