The many applications of fluorinated greenhouse gases as well as the increasing demand for information regarding appropriate measures to reduce their emissions made it necessaryto compile a comprehensive report covering these issues.The report addresses 14 applicationsof fluorinated gases – from refrigerants to tracer gas.For these applications it gives detailedinformation on the fluorinated gases currently used and on arising emissions.For most applicationsemission reductions measures are identified and their pros and cons (e.g.overall GHGemissions,costs,energy use) are assessed.The introduction of environmentally sound substitutes,improved tightness of equipment,and end-of-pipe solutions are examples for feasiblemeasures.From this report it is realistic to conclude that there is a high potential to reduce theemissions of fluorinated gases over the next decades.For most applications the use of environmentallysound substitutes is regarded as most suitable.
