One of the main environmental concerns in urban areas is the final disposition of the municipal solid waste. It is necessary to address this issue having in mind the resource optimization in order to minimize the consequences of residues exposure to the biosphere. This research comprises the investigation and monitoring of soil, surface water and groundwater contamination in and around a municipal dump site in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The methodology includes obtaining geophysical, pedological and hydrogeological data by sampling, followed "in situ" and laboratory analyses, with the purpose of obtaining the local hydrogeological model. GIS tools were employed to systematize physiographical data, along with occupational and social aspects. The integration of the significant data and information gathered has allowed the elaboration of an environmental diagnosis, aiming at minimization of the impacts and improvement of life quality to nearby populations.
