The element dynamics of different aged red oak ecosystems on ash-ameliorated acid-sulphurous mine soils were analyzed in a false time chronosequence study. Special emphasis was given to input-output budgets and internal nutrient cycling. The results were compared to a non-mined reference plot. Soil specific processes (i.e. pyrite and silicate weathering, formation and leaching of secondary minerals) dominated the early stages of ecosystem development. The input-output budgets were strongly negative especially for Fe, Al, Ca, SO~4. Within the first decades output rates declined drastically, but even after 40 years they were remarkably higher as compared to the reference plot. Nevertheless, because of an increase of internal element turnover with litterfall and leaching, NPK cycling was quite similar as compared to red oak stands on non-mined locations. With increasing stand age the soil specific processes lose their dominant influence on element dynamics, and the ecosystems shift to a mode of increasing biological control.
