Problems and solutions for developing Malaysian ex-tin mining lands

Years of tin mining activities left a large area of ex-tin mining land in the State of Perak in central region of Peninsular Malaysia unsuitable for any economic activities. These lands have to be rehabilitated before they can be redeveloped. A recent study was undertaken by the state with the objective of planning rehabilitation and redevelopment programme. Though the study covered all aspects related to the programme this paper focuses on some of the aspects in particular the challenges facing physical redevelopment. Problems and possible solutions were discussed. Based on the finding of the study it is imperative that the rehabilitation and redevelopment were carefully carried out. Resources within the ex-mining lands should be exploited with ingenuity. The mining ponds could be used for several purposes. Materials within the ex-tin mining lands, sands and slimes, can be used optimally for a more economical and environmentally friendly approach.
