Physical foundations of settlement behaviour of municipal solid waste

Due to the currently limited knowledge on settlement behaviour of municipal solid waste (MSW) the settlement of landfills can only be roughly evaluated after the landfills have been closed. In this case settlement predictions are generally based on a mathematical extrapolation of settlement measurements over several years. For this reason this paper will introduce model approaches to the physical settlement behaviour of municipal solid waste (MSW). Several model approaches are proven by laboratory experiments, and their influence is quantified. Based on these first results a load-settlement model can be developed in the future that allows the development of settlement prognoses for landfill bodies from the results of laboratory tests.
