A significant number of techniques have been proposed over the last three decades for on-line mass flow measurement of pneumatically conveyed pulverised coal, with a smaller number of techniques having been proposed for on-line measurement of particle size. This paper presents a brief review of the most promising techniques in this field, and the current state of knowledge and experience. Future developments and possible trends are discussed. An outline of on-going research in pulverised coal combustion at the University of Greenwich is also included.
