This paper briefly discusses thin-film multi-layer insulation theory and then will discuss two deepwater GOM projects. A model will be presented that describes the benefits of combining thin-film insulation with traditional insulation systems to significantly improve subsea tieback distances for oil and gas developments. A novel and innovative design for a deepwater development in West Africa that will use thin-film multi-layer insulation downhole and on the production riser will be described. There will be discussion concerning the versatility of thin-film insulation detailing where it can be used either on the I.D. and/or O.D. of flowlines, production tubing and casing as well as on production risers. Also included is a discussion of the method for calculating U-value in a thin-film multi-layer insulation system.
