This paper describes the new European reaction-to-fire test methods and performance criteria that will replace current national methods required by building regulations. Methods of particular interest for assessment of fire retardant performance include prEN 13823 (SBI), prEN 11925-2 (small flame test), prEN 1187 (roofs), prEN 13501 Parts 1 and 5 (classification procedures). The paper exemplifies comparative fire test-data obtained during two recent DETR Partners In Innovation projects, RADAR 2 (building products excluding floorings) and RADAR 3 (external fire exposure of roofs). These projects examined a wide variety of building products, many of which are manufactured with fire retardants.
