Sailing the Internet Ocean: As a Pathfinder of Library and Information Science Oriented Resources

This paper examines the issues involved in exploring and discovering ubiquitous and volatile resources on the Internet, with special reference to the field of librarianship and information science. The main resources on OPACs, Gopher and Web sites, Listservs, etc. are highlighted. Then, three major concerns with usage are discussed: (1) directory-focused and subject-based browsing/searching, (2) post-processing of files posted on the Listservs and Usenet Newsgroups, and (3) value-added use of existing resources networked. At last, future prospects for the effective use of Internet resources, which allow end users and intermediaries to get instant access to information less expensively, will be presented.
