In virtually every manufacturing industry, more cost-effective and reliable methods are being sought for controlling gas turines and their associated compressors. This paper examines a new approach to the controlling of turbomachinery, namnely, putting control o f the entire machine train into a single digital control system. The decison to retrofit any plant equipment can be made using a number of factors. The availability of spares, reliability of the systems, ease of operations, and addition of process enhancements are ust a few reasons. In particular, the etrofit of turbomachinery controls can improve performance, increase reliability and provide more useful data for maintenance purposes. Turbomachinery controls, can be an integral part of the overall unit control philosophy instead of being treated as a "black box" component. The retrofit process is reviewed from the original retrofit cost/performance analysis to system commissioning, including some of the tough instrumentation decisions discussed later.
