Deterioration properties of fiber-reinforced plastics used for marine structures were investigated. We fabricated three kinds of fiber-reinforced plastics: carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, glass fiber-reinforced plastics and carbon/glass hybrid composites. In order to evaluate the deterioration properties, the specimens were exposed to three conditions: land, shore and marine. The specimens were removed regularly for mechanical flexure, tensile and compression testing. In order to obtain data in a reasonable time, the specimens were also loaded with accelerated testing conditions. The influences of fiber-reinforced plastics on the mechanical properties were investigated under three kinds of exposure conditions and accelerated testing conditions. The changes in color differences on the surface of the specimens were evaluated to assess the deterioration properties of the fiber-reinforced plastics. Compared to natural exposure conditions, the accelerated testing methods are valid for evaluating the durability and safety of fiber-reinforced plastics applied to marine structures.
