AIRBORNE POLAR EXPERIMENT GEOPHYSICA AIRCRAFT IN ANTARCTICA A SCIENTIFIC CAMPAIGN IN THE ANTARCTIC STRATOSPHERE FOR THE STUDY OF THE OZONE HOLE

We report the planning and the execution of the APE-GAIA campaign, an airborne mission withrnthe high altitude research aircraft M-55 Geophysica carried out in Autumn 1999, with the aim ofrnstudying the chemistry and transport processes related to stratospheric ozone depletion in thernsouthern polar vortex. An overview of the project is given, including a description of thernscientific payload operated aboard the M-55 aircraft, of the modelling tools supporting thernscientific flight planning and of the correlative measurements performed by ground-based andrnballoon-borne instrumentation. Some detail is also provided about the organisation of thernmission and about the procedure for the definition and the implementation of the individualrnflight plans. Finally, a synopsis of the scientific missions is presented with a summary of thernflight pattern and short remarks about the measurements.
