In excavation projects involving diaphragm walls, there are options to install either in-soil or inwall inclinometers or both. In the Esplanade- Theatres on the Bay project, eight pairs of in-soil and in-wall inclinometers were installed along the perimeter of the excavation area. Selected measurements are presented and discussed. In general, both methods of installation yielded deflection profiles that are of similar trend and magnitude. The in-soil inclinometers yielded larger displacement. The in-wall incli8nometers produced smoother curves whereas the curves from the in-soil inclinometers were more jagged. Bending moments can be back-calculated from the in-wall inclinometer data, whereas those back-calculated from the in-soil inclinometers may not be reliable.
