Ready access to geotechnical site investigation data in electronic format leads to significant advantages in our ability to visualise and understand the data. However the wide variety of program formats and naming conventions used by companies makes the practicalities of sharing information very difficult and time consuming. This paper outlines how the Association of Geotechnical Specialists resolved this problem in the publication "Electronic Transfer of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Data" and how the AGS For-mat is ideally suited for sharing information at all levels of the geotechnical processes, from on site logging to a national internet enabled archive system.
