The deep excavation for the construction of the Bugis MRT Station was carried out with diphragm walls. Seven tiers of struts were erected to support the excavation because of the presence of the soft marine clay at the site. Piezometers were installed at different soil strata to monitor the change of pore water pressures in the ground. This paper will discuss the monitoring of the pore water pressure distribution and the ground settlement. The field monitoring data will be back-analysed by the finite element method using SAGE CRISP for a better understanding of the mechanism of the pore water pressure change around deep excavations. The field data and the back analysis results will be discussed with regard to the effects of the excavation on the redistribution of the pore water pressure.
